2010 Great Big Tree Challenge Results
2010 was a great year for the Village of Victoria by the Sea. We won! Yes, although many communities felt they had the biggest tree on PEI it was proven, beyond a doubt, that Victoria's Ameican Elm out-sized all the others.
Arborist and judge, Kurt Laird did a terrific job, judging the top entries by height, canopy size, and trunk diameter. Here are the results:
First Prize
Victoria by the Sea
A beautiful American Elm tree which swept every category with a circumference of 20 feet 11 inches, a canopy of 129 feet, and a height of 108 feet
Second Prize
East Baltic
For an Elm tree with a circumference of 18 feet 10 inches, a canopy of 94 feet 6 inches, and a height of 93 feet
Third Prize
Woodland Mills tied with Summerside
Woodland Mills' Oak tree with a canopy of 84 feet and a height 98 feet
Summerside's tree on Arcona Drive with a canopy of 84 feet and circumference of 19 feet 9 inches

Congratulations to all the winners
Thanks again to our fabulous judge, Kurt Laird, our MLA Valerie Docherty, Bill Butler at the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery, our photography judge John Sylvester, Karl Meyer who provided a prize, and by no means least Nancy Russell at CBC, Mitch Cormier, and Karen Mair.
Photography Contest - judge John Sylvester
First place goes to the Montague "Windows on the Water" silver maple tree. It is arguably the biggest tree in the most unique location, so it nudges out the others by a leaf width.
A special mention goes to the beautiful winter image of the elm tree in Traveler's Rest, by Lionel Stevenson, Larry and Tammy Dewar’s photo of their tree in Perth Station Road, New Perth, PEI, and Henry Madigan’s submission of an elm tree in East Baltic .
The prize for the photography contest was donated by Karl Meyer at Kettlegorve Sawmill and Woodworking:' The winner can choose an $80 dollar value bowl, unique heritage wood, or a $80 credit toward Karl turning a bowl from a piece of wood that is special to them.
